Survey and Analysis of Chlorophyll-a Concentration Using the Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index and Its Correlation with the Occurrence of the Species Emerita Brasiliensis in Four Beaches in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract This work corresponds to an analysis of the correlation between chlorophyll-a concentrations in water and the occurrence of the species Emerita brasiliensis Schmitt, 1935. The choice of the object and methodology was due to the scarcity of studies of this nature in the last decade, making it necessary to understand the relationship of this species with the environment and how it behaves under different trophic levels. For this research, four beaches in the western zone of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro were chosen: Amores Beach, Barra da Tijuca Beach, Macumba Beach, and Grumari Beach. The methodology combined the acquisition of satellite data, using Sentinel-2, and field surveys. The analyzed beaches have different levels of urbanization and human use and occupation. Thus, this work aimed to represent a methodological advancement in studies of this type by using chl-a as a parameter to analyze the trophic level of the beaches and evaluate the behavior of the bioindicator at different chlorophyll-a concentrations. The NDCI (Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index) was used as a technique to estimate chl-a levels. The results showed behavioral patterns of the species Emerita brasiliensis at certain trophic levels, thus contributing to the scientific community and coastal environmental management.
